PAPUA NEW GUINEA

HIKING AND EXPLORING NATURE

There are numerous areas all over Papua New Guinea that offer great hiking opportunities. There are many forested areas and nature trails that offer the perfect way to explore the terrain of the country. In addition, hiking along the country’s trails is one of the best ways to see the nature and wildlife of the country. In fact, the country is filled with amazing marine life, birds and other animals that offer an extra layer of appeal to the country’s scenery.

The interior of the country is as unspoilt and indifferent to the outside world as it can be. This also gives you an opportunity to participate in some unusual activities like trekking in areas still untouched by human presence, appreciating the amazing variety of wildlife in the rainforests, and marvelling at the European architecture of its towns. The countryside of Rabaul gives you exciting opportunities of diving and swimming. Bush walking, rafting, and canoeing are some of the other options that should not be missed.

KOKODA TRAIL

Immerse yourself in the cultures of traditional village life, marvel at the size and magnitude of the rainforests and mountains, enjoy the adventure of crossing swift flowing rivers to discover waterfalls, and people living in harmony with their land. Come with us on a journey to experience the Papua New Guinea. The Kokoda Trail is by far the most popular trek in Papua New Guinea and takes between 6-9 days. It is a challenge and the difficulty of the track should not be underestimated. Treks are limited to 15 people so you enjoy a more exclusive journey where you are an individual and not just part of a large group. Our focus on the Kokoda is getting out there and experiencing all the delights that the trail has to offer and most importantly of all having fun. The long days include river crossing, steep and gradual ascends and descends. The 96 kilometre trek is predominately through rain forest. Usually conditions are wet and slippery as rain can be expected on most days. Temperatures range from 24-30 degrees celcius during the day and 16-24 degrees celcius at night.

MARINE LIFE

Divers to PNG will be able to feast their eyes on thousands of fish that inhabit the crystal clear waters, including barracuda, jack, tuna, stingrays, turtles and white and black tip sharks. There are also many anemones, corals, sea fans, clams and clownfish, along with pods of bottlenose and spinner dolphins (particularly in the Walindi area). Whales can also visit the waters of Manus Island, between January and March.

Diving

PNG is recognized internationally as one of the best dive locations in the world with twice as many marine species as the waters of the Red Sea and up to ten times as many as the Caribbean. It has become known as an ‘underwater photographers’ paradise’ with many international award-winning photos being taken in PNG waters.

ASARO MUDMEN

One of the most famous Papua New Guinea people groups are the Mudmen of Asaro. Long ago, during one of their tribal fights, the warriors were driven into the muddy Asaro River. They emerged covered in mud. On their way home they ran into another tribe. By then the mud was all dry and cracked and they must have looked frightful. The other warriors got scared and fled. After that episode, aware of the fearful impression it had made, the warriors of Asaro always covered themselves with mud before going towar, keeping the illusionalive. The Asaro Mudmen perform their dances in the hills surrounding Port Moresby.
