EASTER ISLAND

Ahu Akivi, formed by seven Moai that appear to be looking out to sea. It is thought that they represent the seven explorers sent by king Hotu Matu'a. This Ahu is one of the few located in the interior of the island.
Ahu Akivi was the first scientifically restored sanctuary (in 1960 and 1961). The monument is on the slopes of the Maunga Terevaka volcano.

That culture's most famous features are its enormous stone statues called moai, at least 288 of which once stood upon massive stone platforms called ahu. There are some 250 of these ahu platforms spaced approximately one half mile apart and creating an almost unbroken line around the perimeter of the island. Another 600 moai statues, in various stages of completion, are scattered around the island, either in quarries or along ancient roads between the quarries and the coastal areas where the statues were most often erected. Nearly all the moai are carved from the tough stone of the Rano Raraku volcano.

DIVING

Diving and snorkeling on Easter Island truly is a special experience. Because the island is so remote and isolated, you`ll find fish and corals you won`t see anywhere else. 26% of the fish are endemic to Easter Island and because global warming has not yet had an effect on the underwater world here, the Easter Island corals are actually still growing.

HIKING AND SURFING

Hiking and surfing are the big activities here. One of the most intriguing and practical hikes on Easter Island is along the rocky northwest coast from Anakena to Hanga Roa. Rano Raraku Hike up to the mouth of the extinct Rano Raraku volcano, where the moai were quarried. Over 400 statues stand in various states of completion in what is perhaps the wildest, strangest place on the island (some lay face-down in the grass, others are buried up to their waists, others stand erect, still rooted to rock beneath them). El Gigante, the tallest moai on the island at 71 feet, is also here.
